Adventures of Chaney Oakleaf Book1 Part4

Bertnar and the Bree Town Guard

Fiontann would take Chaney round to the stables where he presented her with a horse. Not a large, thick set, war horse such as his but a smaller and nonetheless just as grand a horse as you would see.

Fiontann explained to her that she must take good care of him and make it a purpose to look after and love him as her own. Chaney’s eyes widen with disbelief, and although she had ridden horses before, lord knows she had even rustled them from unsuspecting travellers whom had strayed too far from their mounts whilst taking rest within the Chetwood many years before, she could not wait to mount her new found friend.

She had never seen a finer horse than Bertnar, for that was his name. She instantly fell in love with him. She thanked Fiontann but at the same time did not let her emotions show towards him.

The short trip back into Bree, which was where Fiontann and Chaney were now heading, was a whole lot more fun for her. She was actually riding a horse which she had not stolen from somebody, and it felt wonderful. She was careful, however, to not let the widening smile on her face show to Fiontann whom at various points in the journey would turn around to see if she were still following.

They would arrive back in Bree, and somewhat worryingly to Chaney, Fiontann pulled his steed up outside the town jailhouse. Chaney sat for a moment on Bertnar not quite sure as to why they were here. Maybe this was what was in store for her. Maybe Fiontann was going to hand her in to the guards. After all she was a wanted girl around Bree by some.

Fiontann dismounted Hedinn and walked over to Chaney, and offered his hand to aid Chaney. Somewhat reluctantly she obliged and swiftly jumped down from Bertnar. He motioned for her to follow him, which she did and they entered the jailhouse.

At this point Chaney became quite nervous, which Fiontann had noticed. He motioned for her to sit on the bench at the side of the counter which she duly did. She closely guarded her face by pulling her hood even further down, and at one point even replaced her mask to cover her face.

At this point Fiontann would talk with the jailhouse captain, and after a fairly lengthy conversation pulled a coin pouch from his belt. Chaney could not make out how much was inside, nor what they had been talking about.

At length Fiontann would turn to Chaney and ask for her to remove her hood and mask. He explained to her that the guards would not be bothering her again so long as she stayed out of trouble. She was free……… at last...... free to walk the cobbles of Bree without having to watch for the guard.

Chaney turned to Fiontann for a moment quite unable to say anything but look at him with her piercing emerald green eyes. He just smiled in his usual way to her and said “Come on lass, lets head to the Pony….”
