The First Journey

Yet in the same winter did the dwarf Ógodr and his son Torgrim leave the realm of the elves to which they had come. The father wanted to be certain that his son would be a worthy successor. So they traveled together with the Elves Gaomee and Farodir, sought adventure wherever they could find it. No battle they avoided and who moved into their way rued it, ere the first strike was made. Torgrim followed his father to places that no other dwarf had seen before. But Ógodr worried too much about his scion. He taught him in combat with the axe, but allowed it rarely that Torgrim could prove his abilities. And whenever danger was within its wake, Torgrim had to guard the camp or the horses.
A year passed, there Torgrim spoke to Ógodr: "Father, how shall I learn to be like thee, if thou holdst me back at any time? If thou ever fearest I could become hurt, I shall never grow to become a warrior."
There Ógodr realized that till now he had betrayed his own flesh and blood about any glory. He asked the Elves for advice. They said to him, he should test his son in a trial. So Ógodr sneaked away at night, to climb a mountain full of dangers. On the top did he ram his axe into the ground and returned without it back to the camp.
In the next morning he spoke to Torgrim: ''Make thy way up this mountain and bring me back what I have hidden there."
So made Torgrim his way that Ógodr had appointed to him. But hardly was his son gone, there Ógodr was plagued with worries, for the mountain was dangerous. Torgrim however found with effort a way and found underneath the top a cave. There lay a sword. That he took and climbed up to the top to enjoy the view. There he saw his fathers' axe. Torgrim let it where it was and climbed down to the others. They were astonished as they saw the blade. Only Ógodr was in anger: "Son! That is not the blade that I have hidden."
There spoke Torgrim: "But father, the only weapon that lay hidden was this sword. Thy axe lies open on the top. Would I have the eyes of an eagle so could I certainly perceive it from here where I now stand. Thou hast named me the wrong target but pointest me the right way."
So Ógodr had to climb the mountain a second time to retrieve his axe. Cursing he returned. As Farodir and Gaomee however explained to Ógodr that they recognized in Torgrim's sword an ancient blade of elven-make there was Ógodr's anger undone and he became proud of his son. Torgrim decided, that this sword would forth on be his weapon, because Mahal had made it as gift to him as he found it in the earth. To his father he spoke: ''The axe is the weapon of the father, the sword that of the son. So father and son will never have to compete with one another."
They continued the journey, but Ógodr still doubted his son. Soon they traveled through the Grey Mountains. It was said, a troll would live there in his cave. Within the next night they heard the striking of a hammer and they thought the troll would try to scare them. So Farodir and Gaomee decided to climb down in order to slay the monster, but Ógodr held them back. To his son he spoke: "Go to the troll! By thy doing I will judge thee."
Torgrim dared his way into the cave of the troll. He found him standing on an anvil. The troll saw him and raised up his hammer. There Torgrim threatened him with his sword and said: "A part of me sees a foe and says: Strike him down. Another sees a smith. Decide what thou wantest to be."
The troll preferred to be the foe and attacked him. But Torgrim evaded the heavy hammer strikes and let him feel his sword. There the troll surrendered and said: ''My name is Glekrel and if thou sparest my life, I will make thee a precious gift."
Torgrim did not trust the troll. But as that one brought forth a wondrous dwarven armor out of silver, steel and finest ornaments, there put Torgrim on the armor to impress the others on his return. But ere he had finished, the troll attacked him yet again. That made Torgrim so wrathful that he cut off one of the troll's legs. The dwarven armor he took and made his way. Still today is the armor in ownership of Ógodr's family and reminds of early days. Even the trolls know of what occurred, for Glekrel survived and told of Ógodr's son.
At the next morning returned Torgrim to his companions. And as Ógodr saw his son, there he was once more proud to be his father. For Torgrim looked now truly like a king,
Thereupon wandered the companions the south and came upon a sea in the near of the lands that are today known as Rhûn. In numerous battles proved Torgrim as sturdy and masterful sword fighter that could stand together with Gaomee and Farodir. Two more years had passed as Ógodr and Torgrim followed the elves out of friendship further into the east to an unknown town. There Gaomee thought to have found what she sought for ...
