Background
Chicorya got her name from her grandfather, for after her birth he said: "her eyes are as blue as cornflowers in fields of grain". He had been a wise and well respected hobbit until the death of his wife made him like good brews a little too much. Chico had dearly loved him nonetheless, and most of all his stories about lands far away.
She was the first child of Howy and Lilly Springblossom, born and raised in one of the wagons in Waymeet. When she was still small the family often took trips to Bree for trading. But after the birth of the fourth child traveling became too hard. Her parents stayed in Waymeet, taking whatever job they could. Only for the pipeweed harvest they still took a trip south.
The family grew quickly and with no steady income they often faced hard times. Chico started to work at a really young age. First helping her mom with the kids, cooking and cleaning the wagon but soon also work on the fields and helping cooks prepare for parties.
She was always very aware that her family was looked down upon. Being from Waymeet wasn't a good start in the first place, having no money or good job made it worse. What seemed to bother the hobbits most was nobody knowing where her mom came from though. She seemed to have no family, no history in either the Shire or Bree and on top of that looked a bit different.
Five years ago, while doing cooking outside on the campfire, she suddenly got the feeling she was watched. Unable to see anyone she walked away from the fire towards some trees. Getting close she heard strange and enchanting singing and could not resist to go have a look. She almost fainted when a female elf stepped from behind a tree. Her curiosity won though and the soft and friendly voice of the elf calmed her down.
"Hello little one, I have been watching you for a while. You seem to be a hard worker and a good cook", the Elf had said. Chico could not help but feeling flattered. "If you wish you can come and work for me, so you can help support your family", the elf had continued. Chico didn't need any time to think and nodded greedy at the offer for a real job at her age.
She had to bite her tongue that whole evening not to tell her parents. The Elven lady had promised to come and talk to them in the night. All night she had been wide awake in her bed trying to hear the soft conversation between her parents and the unusual guest.
That morning her mom asked her if she wanted to go. Chico could not hold her excitement and danced around. With the tenth child on its way and constant troubles to keep them fed her parents agreed. Not only would Chico get her own salary but her parents would also be supported.
So early that morning, Chico left with the elven lady. There was no possibility to hide their departure since Waymeet is very active already before sunrise. The hobbits preparing for their trading trips looked with big eyes at the little lass and the elf leaving. Without a chance to say goodbye Chico shyly waved to her childhood friends.
She worked over three years for her elven mistress, keeping the house in order, dusting the many trophies and cooking when milady was home. When her mistress heard of her desire to one day own her own tavern, she started to teach Chico proper Westron and behaviors. The house was well filled with books that she was allowed to read. The stories made her longing to travel stronger.
Chico outgrew her poor starting, but she always kept the fear of other hobbits looking down on her. Only when cooking or dancing could she forget it for a while. Nonetheless she is almost always happy, smiling and talking. Though trying to hide it, she has quite a temperament. To prove herself she tries to become best in everything she does. She feels rather secure in the presence of big folk and dwarves, as long as they like her food. Her wonder at seeing an Elf never left her, not even after her Mistress became a good friend.
Now she is working hard to get the skills for opening her own tavern far away from the Shire. Her former mistress promised her to help her to fulfill her dream when she reaches 40. Only two more years to go!
