One of the Old Songs

As they wish to draw attention to themselves, to show they mean no threat, Waelden takes out his pipe and lights it. Then he begins singing one of the old songs from the Mark.

Hwær cwom mearg? Hwær cwom mago? Hwær cwom maþþumgyfa? Hwær cwom symbla gesetu? Hwær sindon seledreamas? Eala beorht bune! Eala byrnwiga! Eala þeodnes þrym! Hu seo þrag gewat, genap under nihthelm, swa heo no wære.

A Visitor from Home

Ealdbriht is a suprise visitor to Waelden's old house.

He is on a mission to bring news, though most of what he says to them concerns friends back in Bancross. He tells Ethel that Bronna is asking after her, and misses her.

'Surely you didn't travel all this way to tell Ethel that?' Waelden says with a chuckle.

'No, I bear messages from Averel Thane for Radwig, and certain others, as you likely suspect.' The man nods back at Waelden. His real mission is a serious one.

The group find a recent camp of folk from Stangard, and settle to wait on any Elves approaching them. They know they are being watched.

Reaching for Aid

We halted briefly at Eorl's Hallow, on our way to Floodwend. The site is very close to the town. It is a beautiful place to see at any time, but I had asked Waelden if we could stop there.

I was reaching out for any aid I could. The memory I associated with that place, and the inspiration it gave me of my people may have added a little to my fading strength.

We had visited the place three years earlier, and Waelden had explained the writing, while I had reveled in the pictures.

It has helped for a couple of days. Not long enough.....

Repeating Events?

‘How am I doing, Eda?’ I thought, as we entered the small home where she, Waelden and Ethel had lived. ‘I know, I have not done so well of late, but once I am hale again there will be more of a difference. You will see.’

Thoughts of Turmoil

Story
Obligations and oaths have been my friend's companions while they stayed in Floodwend, revisiting old friends and relatives from a distant past. While they have gained nourishment from this, I have tried to figure out the riddle with the crow, the wolf and what forces that might have driven us from Bancross and to the northern regions of the mark.

We rode on, Duncadda taking point, with Waelden and I flanking Ethel. Herne trotted along behind Ethel’s mount, Roan. We were then followed by wise old Eldhors, who strode on with the clackerty wagon, needing little guidance. A crow sat on the otherwise empty driver’s seat, calling the occasional ‘Hrost’ to the world, and acting like he was boss. He was not. But he was a brave bird.

The Thane and his Mother

The first night we arrived late, so took what room they had in the Tavern to rest in. It was cosy, in an uncomfortable sort of way. The following morning Duncadda told us he would not stay in the village, but spend a little more time in the wilds, as was his want. With the wagon and its contents now out of our hands, we were waiting for instructions from Lord Tuibar. That could take days, possibly weeks. So we visited the Thane to ask if we may rest in his Mead Hall.
